Haskap Update
OMAFRA new crop development specialist Evan Elford is evaluating haskaps at the Simcoe research station in collaboration with the University of Guelph, with a focus on optimum harvest time and fruit quality parameters. Haskap cultivars Indigo Gem and Indigo Treat have acceptable flavour now (June 17) and harvest is underway. Borealis and Tundra are still too immature for harvest.
Fortunately Evan's plots are netted for bird control - other growers are reporting heavy losses from cedar waxwings and other birds.
